Guardians (of the unperceived and instinctual knowledge), fondly called “Twigs”, is a sculpture about protection of Nature’s wisdom. I chose twigs over my favorite vine image for this piece because twigs have the ability to arrange themselves in an orderly fashion and create a guardianship of their wisdom. I used the same design format as Pillars of Wisdom and formed seven groups of twigs with three twigs in each group. I made the twigs from different clay and clay slips, a material which connects the twig image to its source the earth. Three is an important number in this piece because three is the number associated with the principle of growth, increase and expansion. According to Gimbutas, the tri-line sign, a group of three vertical or horizontal lines, goes as far back as Paleolithic times and represents power and the source of life energy necessary for renewal. Finally, I made a clay circle to represent the earth and the twigs push up through the earth and exist on two planes.
